The theme of the conference was The Continuing Recovery? Issues for Solicitors

The first speaker was Seamus McGrath who spoke on Law Society Audits and the issues most recently raised during the numerous audits performed in Solicitors' offices by himself and his colleagues from the Law Society. Seamus has been Senior Investigating Accountant at the Law Society of Ireland since September 2005. He manages a team of professionals engaged in the financial regulation of the solicitors profession and administration of claims on the Law Society's Compensation Fund. Seamus is a Chartered Accountant and a member of the Institute of Legal Accountants of Ireland. His presentation is here

IMG_1431Seamus was followed by Colin Taylor who dealt with the forthcoming PI renewals. Colin covered the lessons Solicitors need to learn from the England and Wales renewal season and how the UK regulatory changes might affect the Irish Solicitors PII market. He also covered some key risk issues and how to maximise the effectiveness of a renewal submission. A superb speaker, Colin is one of the leading presenters of PII and Risk Management training programmes in the legal sector - in particular to solicitor practices. Colin had presented to the Institute of Legal Accountants of Ireland, to the Law Society of Ireland and at Law Society's annual conference. His contribution this year was to his usual very high standard and his presentation is here.

Dr Sharon Sheehan from DBS started us off in the afternoon. Noting that Solicitors were not immune to the recession, she point out that many who had lost staff now find themselves looking to the labour market again. Sharon outlined the best way to employ and the pitfalls that await the employer. Sharon who is a Senior Lecturer at DBS for the last eleven years has lectured extensively in Employment Law at undergraduate, postgraduate and professional levels. We were delighted to welcome her back. Her presentation is here

The last speaker was Dr Loretta O'Sullivan from Bank of Ireland who dealt with the Recovering Economy. She addressed the many changes that are happening at present and outlined the impact they would have in the future. Loretta has been Group Chief Economist with Bank of Ireland since earlier this year. She was formerly Senior Economist within the Monetary Policy & International Relations Division at the Central Bank. Prior to that, she was a Senior Economist at the Department of Finance, during which time, she was seconded for two years to the European Commission's Economic and Financial Affairs Directorate in Brussels. She holds a PhD in Economics from Trinity College, Dublin. Her presentation is here

Paddy Leydon, who is a regional business Manager with Bank of Ireland attended the conference and facilitated a most interesting debate about banking and the future. We are very grateful to him for attending.
